Minister calls on all Queenslanders to ensure a safe Christmas for children

Child Safety Minister Desley Boyle today called on Queenslanders to help ensure children were kept safe during the festive season.

“Christmas holidays can be a great time for children - playing with their friends at the beach or spending time with families at a barbecue.

“But for families already under stress, a cocktail of family problems, partying, increased drinking and overstretching the credit card can heighten tensions.

"If we're not careful, children can feel the brunt of it. Nonetheless I have to say there is no excuse for abuse or neglect.

“After all our children only get one chance at childhood."

Ms Boyle urged people to ask for help before situations got out of control. "Many government-funded and volunteer services will operate over the holiday period - and I thank these workers in advance."

During the Christmas season, and on Christmas Day, people can call: Child Safety After Hours Service Centre 1800 177 135; Kids Help Line 1800 551 800; Domestic Violence Line 1800 811 811; Men's Helpline 1800 600 636 (9am to midnight daily); Gambling Helpline 1800 222 050; Parentline 1300 301 300; Lifeline 24hr Crisis Counselling 131 114; or the Sexual Assault Helpline 1800 010 120 or 3636 5206.
