MATURE-AGE JOBSEEKERS CONNECTED TO SKILLS AND OPPORTUNITY

Two Skilling Queenslanders for Work jobs projects are giving intensive training and work experience to 100 mature-age Brisbane North jobseekers.

Minister for Employment and Training John Mickel today announced that Worklinks Inc had been awarded $140 000 to run the successful Connecting U to Employment programs in Mitchelton and Caboolture.

“There is growing realisation about the workforce implications of our ageing population and an increasing need for employers to recognise what a vital asset mature-age employees can be,” Mr Mickel said.

Member for Everton Rod Welford said projects like this give mature-age jobseekers the best chance of joining or returning to the workforce.

“This is the fifth year the government has funded Worklinks to run the Connect programs on Brisbane’s Northside.

“The organisation’s intimate knowledge of local jobseekers’ needs and proven experience in delivering assistance has led to solid employment outcomes,” Mr Welford said.

Worklinks Manager Jan Robinson said the new projects would consist of eight 10-week instalments of 10-12 participants.

“The projects kick off with one week intensive assistance including skills and career interest profiling as well as literacy and numeracy and living skills assessments,” Ms Robinson said.

“After the first week, participants will continue with intensive assistance for two days per week and spend the other three days getting real world experience through work placements at local employers.

We will also work with Skilling Solutions Queensland helping participants with Recognition of Prior Learning to get credit for current skills or identify strategies to fill gaps for a complete qualification.”

Skilling Queenslanders for Work and its predecessor the Breaking the Unemployment Cycle initiative have helped to create more than 115 000 jobs across Queensland since 1998.
