The Honourable Kerry Shine
Parents urged to avoid back-to-school rush for birth certificates
Queensland parents are being encouraged to apply for birth certificates for their school-aged children this month to avoid the back-to-school rush.
Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Kerry Shine said all children needed current birth certificates to be enrolled in the new preparatory year (Prep) or primary school.
"By applying for birth certificates now, parents can avoid the New Year rush and the stresses of a last-minute panic to get their child's certificate before the school term starts,” Mr Shine said.
“The start of the school year is a hectic time, organising uniforms, books and after-school care.”
"Of course parents who already have a birth certificate for their child don't need to obtain another certificate."
Parents can also obtain the application for at their local courthouse or by phoning the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages on 1300 366 430 to have an application form sent to them.
“Forms can be submitted in person at the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages in George Street and, if their child is already registered, usually collect their child’s birth certificate on the same day,” Mr Shine said.
“Parents can also submit the form at your local courthouse or by mail and you should receive the certificate within three weeks.
Mr Shine said the state-wide introduction of Prep in 2007 gave parents another reason to get in quick.
Parents who require a birth certificate for their child will be required to submit the completed form with copies of their identification such as a current driver’s licence or passport. Each birth certificate costs $25.50.
