Premier and Minister for Trade
The Honourable Peter Beattie

BEATTIE GOVERNMENT ACTS TO ADDRESS REDCLIFFE SAFETY CONCERNS

Main Roads and Education Queensland will build a connection between the two sides of Redcliffe State High School following the death of student Caitlin Hanrick, Premier Peter Beattie said today.

Mr Beattie said Main Roads would fast-track the design of either an underpass or overpass that would run from under or above Oxley Avenue and come out in school grounds.

“Main Roads engineers expect to know early next year whether an underpass or overpass is the best option,” Mr Beattie said.

“We expect to have a final concept and cost estimate by February, finalise design by May and have construction complete by the end of 2007.

“Main Roads has advised that the work will be completed as a priority, meaning there will be some impact on traffic.

“However, Main Roads will work to keep these disruptions to a minimum.

“More detail on the work schedule and final cost of the project will be provided when the design is complete – however, it will meet all disability access requirements.”

Mr Beattie said the connection would be for the use of students and staff of Redcliffe High School, and would be a school asset.

“The sole reason for building the connection is to make sure students and staff can cross Oxley Avenue more safety,” Mr Beattie said.
