ACCOLADES FOR NANANGO SCHOOLHOUSE SAVIOURS
Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative project participants were celebrated today for their hard work and commitment restoring Nanango’s original school building to its former glory.
Employment and Industrial Relations Minister John Mickel applauded the graduation of the Nanango ‘Get Constructed’ jobs project which gave ten jobseekers paid work revamping the building constructed in 1866.
“The renovation has reversed the building’s declining fortunes and it will be appreciated by future generations as a museum of education,” Mr Mickel said.
“The project was part of a broader $512 000 commitment to allow Skill Centred Queensland to help 40 disadvantaged jobseekers back to work.”
Skill Centred Community’s Projects Manager Lyn Bartel said the funding also allowed 10 jobseekers to breathe new life into the ailing Pomona Majestic Theatre which Minister Mickel inspected in October.
Another 10 jobseekers were employed to extend the Elliot Heads Bowls Club.
“A further 10 jobseekers will complete the second stage of the Pomona Majestic Theatre in the New Year,” Ms Bartel said.
“In the Nanango project - participants re-roofed, re-stumped, concreted, laid blocks, painted, sanded and made cabinets.
“Participants gained skills to build new careers.
“Although the project only completed this week, I’m pleased to say that two participants have already gone on to full-time work with one of those using the skills he gained in concreting to start work in this area.”
Nanango Shire Council allocated $20 000 towards the cost of re-establishing the school building.
The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative and its predecessor the Breaking the Unemployment Cycle initiative have helped to create more than 115 000 jobs across Queensland since 1998.
Skilling Queenslanders for Work is part of the $1 billion dollar Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide Queesnland with the skills needed in the 21st Century.
