DROVERS HOME BASE GETS FINISHING TOUCHES

Finishing touches are about to be put on Queensland’s Drovers Camp in Camooweal thanks to an extra $80,000 in Queensland Government funding, Premier Peter Beattie said.

“We’re delivering on our election promise and providing the extra funds so new flooring and other finishing touches can be put on the Camp’s main building,” Mr Beattie said.

“The Drovers Camp has an important role to play in celebrating the contribution of our cattlemen and women in the early days of Queensland and the Northern Territory,” he said.

“The additional funding means the Camp has a permanent home and can collect and preserve memorabilia from our droving past.

“There’s another important benefit too, and that’s the role this facility will play in educating future generations about Queensland’s history.”

It was when Mr Beattie visited the Drovers Camp on August 26 this year to see the site first-hand that he pledged the additional funding.

The Queensland Government has already provided an $80,000 grant to get work started on the building.

Mr Beattie said the extra $80,000 would help complete the project.

Mt Isa MP Betty Kiernan welcomed the funding commitment.

“Having these facilities means Camooweal can showcase its hugely successful annual Drovers Camp Festival which the State Government had also supported with $25,000 in regional events funding,” Mrs Kiernan said.

“It’s a top annual event that attracts over a thousand drovers and tourists every year, with horse riding, broncos, country music, bush poetry, camp cooking and good old local hospitality,” she said.

The Drovers Camp moved to its existing site approximately 1km east of Camooweal on the Barkly Highway in 2003.
