Babinda RSL Memorial Hall to be rebuilt

Communities Minister and Member for Mulgrave Warren Pitt has welcomed news that the Babinda RSL Memorial Hall, which was flattened by Cyclone Larry, will be rebuilt.

Mr Pitt said the Tropical Cyclone Larry Relief Appeal distribution committee had met today and approved funding of $1.3 million to rebuild the popular community landmark.

“Babinda was one of the worst-affected areas when the category five cyclone tore through the region on March 20,” he said.

“The Babinda RSL Memorial Hall was a popular meeting place for the whole community, hosting many of the township’s functions and events.

“This is tremendous news. I placed a high priority on getting approval for the rebuilding of this community facility.

“The replacement of the hall will be an important milestone in Babinda’s recovery from the havoc wrought by Cyclone Larry.”

Mr Pitt thanked the public and the business community for donating to the relief appeal and providing the funds that were helping to rebuild affected communities.

“The Australian public and the corporate sector have shown great generosity through the Tropical Cyclone Larry Relief Appeal so on behalf of all far north Queenslanders, and especially the people of Babinda – thank you.”
