The Honourable Lindy Nelson-Carr
Visitors to Crows Nest National Park over the Christmas break can enjoy the spectacular views from Koonin Lookout, which has been upgraded by the Queensland Government through Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service.
Environment Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr said the Koonin Lookout, which cost $25,000 to replace, provided sweeping views over a deep gorge known locally as the Valley of Diamonds.
“The lookout replaces an older structure that was dismantled in 2004 following engineering and geotechnical advice,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.
“The replacement lookout still has excellent views and the use of natural materials such as stone and granite sand helps it blend with the landscape.
”An educational sign at the site describes the features of the surrounding countryside and its wildlife.
“A helicopter was used to airlift granite sand to form the lookout’s surface, minimising the need for machinery and reducing the risk of damage to the environment.”
The lookout is at the end of the Koonin walking track, about 2.2km from the Crows Nest Falls car park.
“I recommend visitors and residents of Crows Nest have a look at the new Koonin lookout,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.
“It’s a great opportunity to admire one of Queensland’s most beautiful landscapes.”
The project was finished in mid-November this year and complements the upgrade to the Crows Nest Falls lookout which was completed in 2004.
