AD CAMPAIGN SENDS SOBERING MESSAGE TO YOUNG PARTY GOERS

A radio ad campaign urging young Queenslanders to party safe this summer was launched today by Police Minister Judy Spence, Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson and Paul Stanley.

Paul’s 15-year-old son Matt died in September following a violent incident outside a friend’s party.

Speaking in the ad, Paul tells of his family’s tragedy and urges young people to use the “Party Safe” initiative and register their party with local police.

Ms Spence said selected radio stations across south-east Queensland will play the ad to raise awareness of the “Party Safe” initiative in the lead up to the festive season.

“Most parties held by young people are safe and responsible, however some do get out of hand quickly and can result in serious consequences for everyone involved,” Ms Spence said.

“That’s why this summer police are urging Queenslanders, particularly young people, to party safe by obtaining a Party Sake kit and registering their party with their local police.
“Paul makes a very moving, very simple message to young party goers and their parents this summer – stay safe.”

Ms Spence said raising the profile of the Party Safe initiative was one of the key recommendations of the Safe Youth Parties Taskforce, which handed down its report in March.

“The Party Safe initiative is a free service which adds an extra layer of safety to parties,” Ms Spence said.

“By simply filling out a form at your local police station, you can let police know you plan to host a party – and they in turn have all the details in case they are called for assistance.

“In November 20,000 new Party Safe packages, which include brochures and posters, were distributed to police stations across Queensland.

“These promotional items are now being supported by a statewide media campaign to raise awareness of the initiative during the school holidays.”

Ms Spence said that while the ad campaign was funded to initially target radio stations in the south east, they would also be sent to regional radio stations that were willing to support the initiative.

Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson thanked Paul Stanley for his role in the campaign and for helping to raise the profile of youth violence issues.

“There needs to be a balance between fun and safety so parties and gatherings can take place peacefully in our community,” Mr Atkinson said.

“The Party Safe initiative isn’t about taking away the fun. It’s about looking after your mates, and knowing that if anything develops out of your control, help is just a phone call away.”
