Minister for State Development, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel
TRADES OPEN UP FOR BRISBANE NORTHSIDE RESIDENTS
Sixteen residents from Brisbane’s northside received certificates of achievement from CityCare Brisbane’s Access to a Trade project today, which was funded by the State Government.
Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel congratulated the project participants who are working to complete the Access10 course.
“These people are improving their chances of finding work and opened up more training and employment options for themselves,” Mr Mickel said.
“They are joining the 16 other people who have already completed the course thanks to this program run by CityCare Brisbane.
“People without qualifications to a Year 10 level have limited opportunities of finding work or advancing their careers.
“These projects have taken the 32 participants through an intensive 11-week course to provide them with a Year 10 equivalent.”
CityCare Brisbane Project Co-ordinator Kim McCullough said the Australian Defence Forces cannot consider over 900 applications a year for trade apprenticeship positions because people haven’t completed their education to a Year 10 standard.
“As part of this course a fitness trainer ran 10 sessions to help prepare any participants meet the physical requirements of joining the defence forces,” Ms McCullough said.
“This project has produced some great results. The students have told me they are now more confident in larger groups and when meeting new people, which would affect their chances in finding employment.”
Training Ombudsman Peter Ruhanen represented Minister John Mickel at today’s event.
Skilling Queenslanders for Work and its predecessor Breaking the Unemployment Cycle have helped create over 115 000 jobs for Queenslanders since October 1998.
This project, with others funded through these two initiatives, is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide the State’s economy with the skilled workforce it requires.
