Minister for Education and Training and Minister for the Arts
The Honourable Rod Welford
NEW ART EDUCATION PROGRAM FOR STUDENTS
A program to educate school students about art from the Asia-Pacific region is being launched to coincide with the opening of the new Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) at South Bank.
Minister for Education, Training and the Arts, Rod Welford, said the program was based on GoMA’s opening exhibition, the 5th Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT5).
“With the opening of GoMA, this is a wonderful opportunity for teachers and their students to visit the new Gallery and see this exciting new exhibition both at GoMA and the refurbished Queensland Art Gallery,” Mr Welford said.
“The Look Out teacher program provides events, programs and resources for teachers to use to raise students’ awareness of the art and culture of the Asia-Pacific region.
“A range of special APT5 exhibition viewings, workshops, information and resources are available to teachers to help them prepare classroom activities and students’ visits to the exhibition.
“As the only art event of its kind bringing together contemporary art from Asia, Australia and the Pacific, APT5 is a unique opportunity for students to explore our region’s art and culture.”
A teacher viewing of APT5 at will be held at GoMA on Thursday, 7 December at 4.30pm. A second teacher viewing of APT5 and the Historical Asian Collection will be held at Queensland Art Gallery on Saturday, 9 December at 10am.
The Look Out teacher program will also introduce new online resources for teachers, including a program that allows teachers to plan self-guided tours of APT5 in their own time and introduce works to students in the classroom.
Through “Design Your Own Tour!”, teachers will be able to download their personalised tour brochures with images, information about works, Gallery maps, curriculum discussion points and activities.
Other resources on offer include the APT5 education resource kit and activity book (available online and in print) and an education poster highlighting exhibitions and activities throughout 2007.
