Queensland’s women cricketers ready for action: Fraser

Queensland’s women cricketers are ready for action following the official launch of the 2006-07 women’s cricket season at Allan Border Field today.

Sport Minister Andrew Fraser said the profile of women’s cricket had risen in recent years and he expected this trend to continue as more girls took up the sport.

“The profile of women’s cricket has risen greatly in recent years as the excellent performances of our national and state teams have captured the attention of the media and sporting public,” he said.

“It is exciting that Queensland Cricket now offers a clearly defined player pathway for females of all ages.

“Talented young girls from around the state can progress from the junior ranks all the way through to the Women’s National Cricket League and even international competition.

“The outstanding performances of the Queensland Fire, who narrowly lost last year’s national final to New South Wales, are sure to inspire a new generation of girls to get involved in cricket.

“The fact that three Fire players – Melissa Bulow, Kirsten Pike and Jodie Purves – played for Australia in its recent series win over New Zealand, further highlights the strength of women’s cricket in our state.”

Mr Fraser said the government was committed to increasing female participation in sport and active recreation.

“Cricket is a great participation sport for people of all ages and skill levels and the State Government is committed to encouraging more women to get involved,” he said.

“Since 1998, we have provided more than $48 million in funding, through Sport and Recreation Queensland, towards projects, programs and facilities that support the development of cricket throughout the state.

“This is just another example of our commitment to promoting healthy lifestyles and encouraging Queenslanders to participate in regular physical activity.”
