BIG BOOST FOR QUEENSLAND’S REGIONAL EVENTS: PREMIER

Premier and Minister for Trade
The Honourable Peter Beattie

Premier Peter Beattie today announced 37 events across the State will share a slice of $901,450 in the latest round of funding under the Queensland Events Regional Development Program.

Mr Beattie said Queensland’s regional communities are the big winners of the grants, with their festivals and activities injecting money into local communities and creating a dynamic calendar of events for residents and visitors.

“This round of funding takes the total State Government investment to over $7.8 million for more than 370 events since this program started in 2001,” Mr Beattie said.

“It helps rural and regional centres develop their signature events, and that in turn helps fuel their economies and showcase their unique local attractions,” he said.

“This latest round of funding includes first-time money for 14 events which are planned for the Gold Coast, the Southern Downs, Chinchilla, Bundaberg, Yeppoon, the Gladstone region and the Tropical North.”

The Mud, Bulls & Music event in the Landcruiser Mountain Park outside Jimna from November 2-5 was an early event to receive funding. It attracted over 6,000 people through a town which has a population of just 70.

The 36 other events run from February to September 2007.

Another unique event to receive funding for the first time is the Sky Sisters United event at Toogoolawah next April – the world’s only all-female skydiving convention.

A Queensland Events Regional Development Program success story is outback Queensland’s iconic Julia Creek Dirt and Dust Festival which features a triathlon, horse races, concerts, a family jamboree and other activities from April 21-23.

Mr Beattie said it has been awarded $150,000 in Significant Regional Event Scheme funding to grow the event over the next three years.

Mr Beattie said regional event organisers have until February 2, 2007, to submit applications for funding under round 12.
