Minister for Primary Industries and Fisheries
The Honourable Tim Mulherin
LIFESTYLE HORTICULTURE SECURES FUTURE WITH GOVERNMENT AND INDUSTRY FUNDING
The lifestyle horticulture industry’s long-term success has been given a significant boost with the announcement of a $480,000 commitment by government and industry to the Australian Centre for Lifestyle Horticulture over the next year.
Minister for Primary Industries and Fisheries Tim Mulherin said the Department is committing $152,700 of support to help ACLH implement the key project over the next 12 months.
“The lifestyle horticulture industry makes a direct annual contribution of $1.4 billion to the Queensland economy and employs around 10,000 Queenslanders,” Mr Mulherin said.
“The industry’s importance to our daily lifestyle and tourism and construction industries is apparent through diverse activities including nursery, cut flower and turf grass production, landscape design and installation, and sports field and public open space management.
“The partnership between local, state and federal governments and industry will assist the lifestyle horticulture industry to meet challenges and sustain growth and profitability.”
Other supporters of ACLH’s Strategic Lifestyle Horticulture Industry Development Project, based in Brisbane, are the Australian Government’s Regional Partnership Program and Redland Shire Council.
Mr Mulherin said the project would build on previous industry development initiatives from 2005 when DPI&F facilitated the formation of the ACLH in order to unite industry one ‘umbrella body’.
“Key industry challenges to be addressed in the project include water issues, export development, training and labour attraction, industry R&D needs and funding for new projects,” he said.
“The project contributes to the Department’s outputs of increased productivity and exports and targeted research and development for a sustainable and profitable industry.”
The ACLH has delivered a number of outcomes for industry including formalising trade links with Singapore, delivering an innovative management training initiative in collaboration with the Australian Institute of Management, overseeing the delivery of a whole of industry irrigation training program, and improving communication across the industry.
The Strategic Lifestyle Horticulture Industry Development Project is expected to commence in December 2006 and will run for twelve months.
