DPI&F SPONSORS INDIGENOUS STUDENTS UNDER CADETSHIP SCHEME

The Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries has selected four Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island high school students to receive cadetships which will support them through secondary school and onto further study or employment.

Primary Industries and Fisheries Minister Tim Mulherin said the cadetships, worth $5000 each, were part of the Queensland Government's Education to Employment Scheme. Student selection was based on merit, equity and personal interests.

“The four students selected for the 2007 intake are Sharnee Jai (Innisfail), Samia Sinclair (Beaudesert), Liam Spencer (Victoria Point) and Jacinta Dennison (Warwick),” Mr Mulherin said.

“This is the seventh intake of students sponsored by DPI&F and I’m very proud that the Department will contribute to their schooling.

“The program provides each student with financial assistance, subject to satisfactory results, for schooling costs, work experience with the Department and a DPI&F mentor.”

Mr Mulherin said previous cadetship students had gone onto university to undertake further study, into the public service or gained a trade.

“One former cadet is planning to study biological sciences, while another is an apprentice diesel fitter with plans to eventually become an electrical engineer.

“Clearly this scheme works. It is a joint program between 16 government departments and agencies aimed at improving education and employment opportunities for young Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders,” he said.
