Minister for State Development, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel
YOUTH CENTRE UPGRADE TO CONTINUE SKILLING UP JOBSEEKERS
A jobs project to upgrade the Coomera/Oxenford Youth Centre has entered its second stage thanks to a $280 260 grant from the State Government’s Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative.
Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel said Bridging the Gap – Job Help Gold Coast has been awarded the grant to run the Northern Exposure 2 project which would provide 24 jobseekers with training and paid work experience in construction and landscaping.
“This project will build on the work of the original Northern Exposure project where participants constructed walkways and other amenities near the lake area,” Mr Mickel said.
“In this second stage, participants will continue the walkway construction, plant trees, build BBQ areas, construct covered eating areas, landscape the surrounding gardens and restore the community pond area.
“Participants will gain skills in landscaping, horticulture, painting and carpentry and will be well equipped to move into work in the construction or landscaping industries.”
Bridging the Gap – Job Help Gold Coast general manager Ian Hall said participants would receive paid work, personalised job search assistance and further training to help them gain sustainable employment.
“We will also provide follow-up support and allow participants to return to our offices at any time to use equipment and update their resumes,” Mr Hall said.
“We hope the Youth Centre precinct will become a major local hub and plans are already underway to construct a community performing arts centre next door.”
Skilling Queenslanders for Work and its predecessor the Breaking the Unemployment Cycle initiative have helped to create more than 113 000 jobs across Queensland since October 1998.
The initiative is part of the $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan, which aims to meet the skill needs of the booming Queensland economy into the future.
