Premier and Minister for Trade
The Honourable Peter Beattie

Premier Peter Beattie has today officially opened The Village Centre – the retail and residential hub in the $800 million Kelvin Grove Urban Village.

Mr Beattie said the centre, a $150 million development by Indigo, includes a supermarket, gourmet food stores, restaurants, specialist retail outlets and 213 residential apartments.
“The urban village is a Queensland Government Smart State initiative involving the Department of Housing and Queensland University of Technology working together to create a dynamic mixed-use community on 17 hectares of land at Kelvin Grove, just two kilometres from Brisbane’s Central Business District,” Mr Beattie said.

“When completed, this total $800 million project will have a diverse range of housing options mixed in with educational, health, retail, recreational, community and business opportunities an exciting precinct,” he said.

“The Village is master planned to demonstrate best practice in sustainable mixed-use urban development.”

More than 800 residential units will be built in the Village including about 155 affordable rental units which are being developed by the Brisbane Housing Company.

Mr Beattie said the Queensland Government was committing more than $150 million to the Kelvin Grove Urban Village project.

“The Department of Housing has spent $60 million to date on the project,” he said. “In addition, the Queensland Government will be developing the Creative Industries Academy which is currently in the design stage. This academy will cater for high school students wishing to specialise in the arts and creative industries.”

The Queensland Government has also provided a further $37.5 million for the Creative Industries Precinct and the Institute for Health and Biomedical Innovation at QUT.

“Now the Kelvin Grove Urban Village has a heart with the opening of The Village Centre and I congratulate Indigo on realising the vision.”
