New Youth Justice Service Centre opened in Cairns

Services for vulnerable young people in Far North Queensland, particularly those in contact with the youth justice system, will be better delivered following today’s official opening of an improved Youth Justice Service Centre in Cairns.

The Minister for Communities and Youth, Warren Pitt, said the Far North Queensland Youth Justice Service Centre brought the Queensland Government’s youth justice programs and services for the region together in the one location.

“This centre is one of 15 across the State at the forefront of the Queensland Government’s efforts to address youth offending and provide the best possible chance of rehabilitation to those in contact with the justice system,” Mr Pitt said.

“The purpose-designed Youth Justice Service Centre provides for a specialist response to offending, which will result in better outcomes for young people, their families, and the wider community.

“In short, the services and programs are aimed at rehabilitation and diversion of young people from the youth detention system.

“The centre means that we can provide more effective and efficient service delivery, and better outcomes for young people and the community in general,” he said.

The new centre at 277 Mulgrave Road, Westcourt is part of the broader Department of Communities’ Youth Justice Expansion Program.
