The prosecution of a Toowoomba man for performing unlicensed painting and renovation work sends a strong message to rogue contractors operating on the Darling Downs, Public Works, Housing and ICT Minister Robert Schwarten said today.

Mr Schwarten said the Queensland Building Services Authority (BSA) prosecuted Warren Harold Hudson and the Toowoomba Magistrates Court yesterday fined him $3,750.

Mr Hudson had two contracts on foot for a combined total of $47,500 and pleaded guilty to the charges of unlicensed contracting. He has four months to pay the fine and in default faces 75 days prison.

Mr Schwarten said the case showed that the BSA is tough on building contractors who do the wrong thing.

“This is a good result for the honest, appropriately licensed builders and contractors and sends a message to any rogues in the industry that unlicensed contracting is not worth the risk,” Mr Schwarten said.

“It also highlights the risks consumers take if they engage an unlicensed building contractor. Substandard work performed by unlicensed contractors can leave consumers with costly rectification bills.”

BSA general manager Ian Jennings warned builders and residents in the Toowoomba area not to engage Mr Hudson to perform any building work.

“Building work valued in excess of $1100 must be performed by a BSA licence holder. This applies to a range of trades including both painting and renovations,” he said.

He also reminded consumers to ask trade contractors and builders to show their BSA licence card. If they can’t show you their licence… show them the door!

Mr Jennings said on-line licence searches could be conducted by visiting www.bsa.qld.gov.au
