Bundaberg Port Authority records busy year

Bundaberg Port Authority has recorded a busy year despite a poor season for the sugar industry, Minister for Transport and Main Roads Paul Lucas said today.

Mr Lucas said the Bundaberg Port Authority Annual Report 2005-06 showed the port authority was meeting the challenges posed by an uncertain time for its main bulk export, sugar.

“Bad weather impacted on the sugar cane cut in the 2005 season, and tonnage at the port was down,” he said.

“Strong commodities tonnages through the port included molasses imports, which rose 25%.”

Mr Lucas said work on the Marina Stage 3 Future Foreshore Development earthworks was completed in 2005-06, and planning for the development of the site was continuing.

“It is important that the port attracts new cargoes and the State Government is assisting in this through trade and transport corridor reviews,” Mr Lucas said.

Fast facts from the Bundaberg Port Authority Annual Report 2005-06:

  • 24 ships visited the Port of Bundaberg this year
  • total tonnage was 414,609 tonnes of freight
  • 379,379 tonnes of sugar was exported
  • the Port of Bundaberg was the busiest first port of arrival in Australia for small cruising craft for the third consecutive year
