Port of Townsville records strong result

The Port of Townsville recorded a strong trading year in 2005-06, setting a number of records, Minister for Transport and Main Roads Paul Lucas said today.

Mr Lucas said the Port of Townsville's Annual Report 2005-06 showed the port was continuing to deliver on its role as a major contributor to North Queensland’s economy.

“Close to 10 million tonnes of cargo passed over the wharves at Townsville in 2005-06,” he said.

“The overall figure was slightly less than the 2004-05 total, but included import records for cement, sulphur and general purpose oil, and export records for high analysis fertiliser and plantation pine logs.

“As this report shows, the Port of Townsville is actively pursuing opportunities to increase trade.

“It is also an exciting time for Townsville as the port sets clear directions for the next 25 years through development of its master plan.”

Mr Lucas said the port had recently sought feedback on its Statement of Proposal to be considered for inclusion in a draft Land Use Plan to help gain a clear understanding of the major issues and challenges within and surrounding the port area.

“The 2005-06 year was also the fourth year in a five-year program to bring port infrastructure up to the highest possible standard,” he said.

“Just over $10 million has been spent on maintenance works during 2005-06 – the highest amount in the port's history.

“I congratulate the Port of Townsville on its 2005-06 result and its drive to pursue increased trade in the years ahead.”
