Mackay Port Authority marks record year
Mackay Port Authority has recorded a strong 2005-06 financial year, with record airport passenger numbers and increased seaport cargo figures, Minister for Transport and Main Roads Paul Lucas said today.
Mr Lucas said Mackay Port Authority's 2005-06 annual report showed the port authority remained a major player in Mackay's economy.
“The number of passengers through Mackay's airport increased 14% to a record 656,326,” he said.
“While the port authority faced the challenge of Jetstar withdrawing from direct Sydney-Mackay flights, it worked with Virgin Blue to reinstate the direct service in May.
“The Mackay Port Authority is investing more than $3.3 million in upgrading parking facilities at the airport to offer visitors greater parking choices,” he said.
“The $2.2 million redevelopment of the security departure lounge is also close to completion.
“The port authority also recorded a strong seaport cargo of 2.35 million tonnes, 3% higher than in 2004-05.”
Mr Lucas said petroleum imports increased by close to 10%, sugar exports increased 6%, and grain exports were down 40%, largely because of the drought.
“And while Mackay is making strong plans for the future, its past won't be forgotten. Timber from the old sugar pier – the harbour's original wharf – will be used in the restoration of Old Parliament House in Canberra.”
