Minister for Primary Industries and Fisheries
The Honourable Tim Mulherin
ERADICATION SCHEME GETS TICK FROM MINISTER
Minister for Primary Industries and Fisheries Tim Mulherin has approved a voluntary cattle tick eradication area in the Chinchilla, Eidsvold and Mundubbera shires.
“Cattle ticks and tick fever is a serious economic pest for the Queensland cattle industry,” Mr Mulherin said.
“If left unchecked, the tick can significantly reduce cattle liveweight gain and milk production. It is also responsible for transmitting three blood-borne tick fever organisms, which cause sickness and death in cattle.
“In the on-going fight against these pests and to reduce the costs to industry, the Department is working with the livestock industries of Queensland to control the distribution of the cattle tick.”
Under the voluntary cattle tick eradication scheme the Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries supports producers in their undertaking of the eradication process with the provision of regulatory controls and an advisory service for a period of three to five years.
“I am pleased to approve the establishment of a voluntary cattle tick eradication area under the management of the Auburn Tick Eradication Association.”
