STUDENTS CONVERGE ON CAIRNS FOR NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Queensland’s next generation of athletics stars will be pitted against their interstate rivals when they compete in Cairns from Friday (24 November) at the 12 years-and-under School Sport Australia Track and Field Exchange.

The national exchange will be held at Barlow Park on the corner of Severin and Scott Streets, Parramatta Park, Cairns.

Education and Training Minister, Rod Welford, said some 500 students from across Australia would compete in 146 events over the 3-day competition.

“Queensland will have 112 students competing, making it the largest team at the event,” Mr Welford said.

“These young athletics stars have been selected from thousands of hopefuls to represent their state or territory at national level.

“Categories are also open to students with a disability so they have an opportunity to show their talents.”

Mr Welford congratulated the young athletes on their selection and wished them every success.

“It's a great experience for these students to compete at an elite level while meeting their peers from across the country,” he said.

“I would also like to thank the dedicated teachers, school staff and parents who have contributed to ensuring the exchange is a success.”

With the exception of Western Australia all states and territories will be represented.

The event coincides with the official opening of the extensions to Barlow Park which include additional grandstand seating facilities, function rooms and a photo-finish box.
