YOUNG GOONDIWINDI JOBSEEKERS SET FOR WORK

Sixteen early school leavers from Goondiwindi completed a State Government-funded employment project today.

Minister for Employment and Training John Mickel said those graduating today have a better understanding of the options and opportunities available to them thanks to the Get Set for Work program.

“I’m sure these sixteen young people have benefited from the support, training and work experience they have received from the Goondiwindi Training and Technology Centre and Downs Industry Schools Co-Operation (DISCO),” Mr Mickel said.

“This is just one part of a larger Get Set for Work project that DISCO has organised for a total of 55 early school leavers in the region thanks to a $291 500 grant from the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative.

“I wish each of today’s graduates all the best for the future whether that is going back to school or other study or joining the workforce.”

Goondiwindi Training and Technology Centre Executive Officer Esme Cairns said three of the graduates had already found employment and the organisation is confident that the majority of the others will gain full time jobs or roll over to further training.

“Completing a Certificate I in Agriculture and some competencies from the Certificate II will give them skills to make them more competitive in the job market as well as receiving a recognised qualification,” Ms Cairns said.

“We’re looking for positive outcomes for all the participants and some have opted to return to school and take up school-based traineeships or apprenticeships.

“Local industry and the wider community have strongly supported this project and allowed the group to visit workplaces and talked with them on different topics.”

Skilling Queenslanders for Work and its predecessor Breaking the Unemployment Cycle have helped create more than 113 000 jobs across Queensland since October 1998.

This project with others funded through Skilling Queenslanders for Work forms an important part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide the State’s booming economy with a skilled workforce.
