ITALIAN BUSINESSES LURED TO THE SMART STATE

MILAN – ITALY: A powerful Italian business network will be visiting Queensland next year to develop investment and trade links in the Smart State, Premier Peter Beattie has announced.

Addressing a forum hosted by the Australian Ambassador to Italy Peter Woolcott last night, Mr Beattie said the influential delegation was being organised by PROMOS – an agency of the Milan Chamber of Commerce.

“The chamber established PROMOS to help Italian companies make the most of globalisation by developing international links in their business operations,” Mr Beattie said.

“Working with PROMOS is smart business for Queensland.”

The Lombardy region is a major importer and exporter. The province of Milan alone accounts for about 26% of the country’s imports and 14% of exports. Milan’s growth rate in 2004 was 10.6%.

Mr Beattie said the strongest local industry was the mechanical, metallurgical and electro mechanical sector.

“While we’ve been an important supplier of quality cotton to mills in Lombardy for 15 years, broadening our export base is providing many new opportunities in areas like biotechnology and research collaboration.”

PROMOS directly serves about 2300 Italian businesses and connects more than 1000 foreign enterprises with business interests in Milan and the wider Lombardy region.
