The Honourable John Mickel

Eight school-based trainees from Rockhampton and Yeppoon today graduated from the Capricornia Metals Industry Training Program 2.

Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel said the Capricornia Training Company (CTC) received $166 000 from the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative to fund 16 two-year school-based traineeships hosted at John Holland SMP.

“This is the second time the CTC have been funded to run this program and again it has been very successful,” Mr Mickel said.

“The eight who graduated today are joining the others who opted out of the program early by taking on full-time apprenticeships.

“This project demonstrates the fantastic results that can be produced when different parts of the Rockhampton community work together.

“I’d like to recognise the valuable roles that John Holland SMP, CTC, Fitzroy Industry Regional Skills Training and the Central Queensland Institute of TAFE have all played to assist this project,” Mr Mickel said.

Capricornia Training Company CEO Rod Jones said the eight graduates have a bright and varied future in front of them.

“Three of today’s graduates will continue on with John Holland as apprentice boilermakers,” Mr Jones said.

“Another three are moving into electrical apprenticeships and one each in mechanical and diesel fitting.

“Today’s graduates have been good hard workers and have each completed a Certificate II in Engineering.

“We had a similar success rate the first time we ran this project with fifteen out of sixteen moving into apprenticeships and the last one gaining other full-time employment.

“The project has been extended again and also expanded. As this second group graduates we welcome another 20 students who will join CMIT3.”

Skilling Queenslanders for Work aims to provide a skilled workforce for the State’s booming economy and with its predecessor Breaking the Unemployment Cycle has helped create over 113 000 jobs since October 1998.
