Premier and Minister for Trade
The Honourable Peter Beattie

Statement from Premier Peter Beattie

EUROPE: Queensland Premier Peter Beattie said:

“I confirm today that I referred two matters relating to Gordon Nuttall (the initial matter) and Merri Rose to the CMC.

I head an honest government and have no regrets in referring both matters to the CMC to ensure the maintenance of honesty and integrity in government.

The Government will take action on any CMC recommendation arising out of the Gordon Nuttall matter, and this includes total cooperation with the CMC inquiry. The CMC can have whatever information they require and interview anyone they want to assist the investigation.

In relation to the Merri Rose matter, the CMC and the appropriate bodies have initiated action and it would be grossly improper for me to comment any further.

As Premier, I respect the court system and this is now a matter for courts.

I also note the advice provided to the Acting Premier by both the CMC and the Solicitor-General that any comment by the Government has potential to jeopardise the investigation and court processes.

While I have been extremely disappointed by these events the Government will continue to deliver for Queensland and we will allow the independent watch dog to do its job.”
