The completion of the new multi million dollar inner city substation has moved a step closer with two new transformers lifted into position at the site today.

Minister for Mines and Energy Geoff Wilson said the transformers arrived in Mackay aboard a fleet of 4 semi-trailers.

“The transformers weigh 50 tonnes each,” Mr Wilson said.

“The project will proceed at full speed now that this important milestone has been achieved.

“The new substation will improve supply reliability and performance in Mackay city centre and will cater for future expansion, development and load growth,” he said.

Member for Mackay Tim Mulherin said civil work had been progressing since March with earthworks and construction nearing completion.

“The substation, which is the second in the inner city, will significantly increase power supplied to the CBD area,” Mr Mulherin said.

“Electricity from the new substation will be distributed throughout the Mackay CBD via an underground cable network.

“The substation is close to major business and community centres such as Canelands, the Civic Centre and the city heart.”

“The substation is expected to be up and running early in the new year,” he said.

The project is part of a $77 million capital works program Ergon Energy is undertaking across the Mackay region this year.
