The Honourable Peter Beattie

LONDON: Premier and Minister for Trade Peter Beattie will tonight (8.40pm our time) represent Queensland at the Remembrance Day Ceremony at the Australian War Memorial in Hyde Park.

The memorial lists the 23,844 Australian home towns – many across Queensland – of Australian service men and women who lost their lives in World Wars I and II.

“This is a solemn time on solemn day for most countries of the world, caught up as they were in the Great War between August, 1914, to this day in 1918,” Mr Beattie said.

“Australia, on the other side of the world, was no exception.

“Of the 102,820 Australians whose deaths have been recorded in wars since 1860, almost 62,000 were casualties of World War I.

“They died at Gallipoli, in France and in just about every part of the globe where hostilities took place.

“Our national consciousness was forged by that conflict, especially at Gallipoli in 1915.

“We should never forget the Queenslanders who left their country, their cities, towns and land, because they helped make us who we are today.”

The service will take place tonight 8.40pm Australian time (10.40am in the UK).
