Attorney-General and Minister for Justice and Minister Assisting the Premier in Western Queensland
The Honourable Kerry Shine
Susan Gardiner has been appointed president of the Guardianship and Administration Tribunal, Attorney-General and Justice Minister Kerry Shine said today.
“Ms Gardiner's legal career has spanned more than 20 years, and she has a long-held interest in protecting the rights of some of the most vulnerable people in our community," Mr Shine said.
“As deputy president of the Guardianship and Administration Tribunal (GAAT) for the past six years she has presided over thousands of complex legal matters involving the care of adults with impaired decision-making capacity.”
"Mr Shine said Ms Gardiner, who was admitted as a barrister in 1984, had acted as GAAT president since July 2006 and had been the president of the Children Services Tribunal since 2005.
Her earlier roles have included being the national director of mediation in the Family Court of Australia and a tutor in law at the Queensland University of Technology.
“GAAT is a vitally important body that has the authority to appoint guardians and administrators for adults with impaired decision-making capacity and these are often sensitive and highly emotive issues.” Mr Shine said.
“Ms Gardiner has demonstrated her compassion and understanding of these complex issues throughout her career.
"Issues of guardianship are important for all Queenslanders. Last financial year, 39 percent of the Tribunal’s hearings took place in regional Queensland. I am pleased that half of the new appointees to the Tribunal are from regional Queensland.
“I congratulate Ms Gardiner on her appointment."
The following people were also newly appointed as part-time members of GAAT.
• Brydget Barker-Hudson
• Sandra Henderson
• Gregory Lewis
• Aaron Suthers
• Daniel Toombs
(All appointed until 8 November 2007)
