Minister for State Development, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel
Ninety Sunshine Coast jobseekers will benefit from two local Skilling Queenslanders for Work projects that will skill them for local employment.
Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel said $151,000 in funding was awarded to the Community Agency for Development Employment and Training (CADET) to run the Parents and Carers – Back to Work and Multiskilling for Hospitality projects featuring five intakes over 12 months.
“Both projects are giving participants, including the mature-aged, skills and training to move into local jobs in industries suffering labour shortages,” Mr Mickel said.
“Parents and Carers – Back to Work will help participants with caring commitments move into work by providing training in one of five industry areas – retail, café operations, business administration, aged care or nursery work.
“The Multiskilling for Hospitality project will service a broader intake of participants over 40 years of age who will have the opportunity to complete a Certificate II in Hospitality (Operations) as part of their work.”
Mr Mickel said there would be two intakes of 20 participants at Noosa and Caloundra.
CADET Manager Michael Herbert said the projects would develop skills that are in high demand on the Sunshine Coast.
“These projects will maximise participants’ employment opportunities and help fill many vacant positions with skilled workers,” Mr Herbert said.
Skilling Queenslanders for Work and its predecessor the Breaking the Unemployment Cycle initiative have helped create more than 113 000 jobs across Queensland since October 1998.
The initiative is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide Queenslanders with the skills required by the State’s booming economy.
