Minister for Environment and Multiculturalism
The Honourable Lindy Nelson-Carr
Visitors to Eungella National Park can again enjoy breathtaking views of the Mackay Highlands, following the redevelopment of the Range View lookout Environment Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr and Member for Mackay Tim Mulherin said today.
Mr Mulherin said upgrades to the lookout and the Sky Window walking track would benefit the 80,000 people who visited this popular part of the national park each year.
“The new lookout, part of the Mackay Highlands Great Walk, provides vistas of outstanding scenery including dense rainforest, deep gorges, precipitous escarpments and farming communities,” he said.
The Mackay Highlands Great Walk is located 90km west of Mackay and traverses Eungella National Park, Crediton State Forest and Homevale National Park.
Ms Nelson-Carr said the project, which involved the construction of a new lookout platform and the removal of the old lookout and concrete steps, resulted in easier access and improved safety for visitors.
“The walking track and new lookout platform were reopened to the public last month.
“To finalise the $97,000 project, the track and the platform will also be resurfaced before the year’s end.”
Ms Nelson-Carr said the new structure was designed for easy maintenance and servicing, including any repairs that may be needed after tree falls.
“The structure has been constructed from high durability components and, with minimal maintenance, is expected to have a service life of more than 50 years,” she said.
“This is part of the Beattie Government’s significant and ongoing commitment to upgrading facilities and walking tracks in the Mackay Highlands area, with $3 million spent during the past three years.”
