LONDON: Queensland’s unique qualities are being trumpeted to local doctors as Premier Peter Beattie steps-up an international recruitment campaign to lure more skilled professionals to the Smart State.

Mr Beattie has pitched the benefits of a career Down Under to Londoners and representatives from the United Kingdom’s top recruitment agencies at a special Queensland reception.

“Our State has undergone a huge transformation over the last eight years, and we’re investing heavily in infrastructure and building major research and education capacity to provide nothing but the best for our professionals in the years ahead,” he said.

“Queensland also offers UK health professionals a range of benefits their local industry can’t.

“For starters, we’ve got many job vacancies and relocating for a fresh start in Queensland is a great way to grow your career abroad and make a valuable contribution to modern Queensland.”

Mr Beattie said the Cairns Base Hospital’s recruitment campaign has already signed up 150 UK nurses in recent months because of the Government’s UK campaign.

“Our health system is one of the globe’s most decentralised, offering world-class integrated health services, the most advanced diagnostic and information sharing systems and the world’s largest tele-health network, so it is a great time to work for Queensland Health,” he said.

“There’s also a generous salary and a great quality of life, making Queensland too attractive to pass up.”

This is the second time this year Mr Premier has campaigned boldly to health professionals in the UK, this time widening the net to appeal to other skilled professionals.

During a recruitment mission in May, Mr Beattie facilitated the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the General Medical Council and the Medical Board of Queensland to streamline the employment process for doctors moving to Queensland.

“Of the 157 medical practitioners who attended recruitment functions across the UK in May, 101 are now formally being considered by our Health Service districts.”

Mr Beattie said Queensland Health has increased its clinical workforce by 448 more doctors, 1,826 more nurses and 636 more allied health professionals between June 2005 and September 2006.
