Minister for Primary Industries and Fisheries
The Honourable Tim Mulherin
Minister for Primary Industries and Fisheries Tim Mulherin said today that test results on a suspect sample of sugar cane from a Mackay property would be available tomorrow.
Mr Mulherin confirmed the sample was uncovered as part of the state’s structured, comprehensive surveillance program in the battle against sugar cane smut.
Mr Mulherin has called a meeting of the control group, comprising Canegrowers, BSES Limited, the Australian Sugar Milling Council and Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries, for tomorrow.
“It would not be appropriate for me to comment further until the test results are returned and have been discussed with stakeholders,’’ Mr Mulherin said.
“The Government is taking this extremely seriously and will be taking all possible steps to ensure growers get the support they need.’’
