Minister for State Development John Mickel today visited the award-winning Townsville ferry company SunFerries to see first-hand the continued growth and prosperity of the city and its tourism sector.

“SunFerries recently won the prestigious State Export Award for Tourism in the Australian British Chamber of Commerce Awards which is a huge compliment for the company and for the region,” he said.

“It shows just what a world-class operation SunFerries has become in the past seven years.”

SunFerries owner, Terry Dodd, said the company was currently undergoing a multi-million refit to cope with the expected increase in tourist numbers visiting Magnetic Island.

“The opening of two new resorts - the $140M Peppers Blue on Blue Resort early next year, and the $90M 1 Bright Point which is taking bookings for next month, will provide a huge boost to tourism operators in the region,” he said.

“Our upgade will include a million dollar upgrade of the Breakwater Terminal which will provide improved safety for passengers, better wheelchair accessibility and streamlined check-in and freight facilities.”

Next month, SunFerries will take possession of two new state-of-the-art catamarans valued at $3.4 million each. The new ferries will transport up to 300 people per trip on more than 15 return services each day.

Mr Mickel said the State Government was committed to Townsville’s continued growth and prosperity.

“Earlier this year, the Government approved the development agreement for the $1 billion Townsville Ocean Terminal project,” he said.

“We will contribute $15 million toward the project which consists of an ocean terminal for cruise and military ships as part of an overall redevelopment of the city’s Breakwater area, including a residential and tourism precinct near Jupiters Hotel and Casino.
