PREMIER NOMINATES FIVE ICONIC QUEENSLAND SITES FOR MONOPOLY
Premier Peter Beattie said today he had nominated five Smart State icons for possible inclusion in the new ‘Monopoly Australia Here & Now’ edition of the ever popular board game.

“I want to thank everyone who took the time to email, write or just chat to me in the street about which Queensland icons should be included in the new version of Monopoly,” Mr Beattie said.

“It’s been a tough decision but after reading the submissions and talking to a lot of Queenslanders I have decided to nominate, in no particular order:

o The Stockman’s Hall of Fame at Longreach
o Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast
o Australia Zoo on the Sunshine Coast,
o the Great Barrier Reef; and
o Brisbane’s South Bank cultural precinct

“The company behind Monopoly, Hasbro, set a hard task in allowing me to nominate just five iconic sites for a State as beautiful and diverse as Queensland.

“I believe the five icons I have chosen represent Queensland in all of its diversity, along the four points of the compass.

“Dozens and dozens of locations, towns and buildings were suggested by Queenslanders over the past few weeks.

“Hundreds of people have taken the time to let me know their favourite Queensland icon and I want to thank everyone for making a contribution.

“To all those who voted for icons other than the five I have nominated I want to say it was a tough choice and Queensland should have been given special dispensation to offer up at least 10 icons.

“Support came in for an amazing variety of icons including highways, trees, sporting venues and even public toilets.

“Truly the sublime to the ridiculous,” Mr Beattie said.

All State Premiers have been able to nominate five iconic places to be part of an online promotion where voters will decide on the top three from each Australian State and Territory.

“I am sure Hasbro will soon let us know where and how we can vote for our favourite Queensland icon.

“I would urge all Queenslanders to take the opportunity to get on line and vote for their favourite Queensland icon,” the Premier said.
