New Minister for Women Margaret Keech has challenged Queensland men to publicly show their opposition to violence against women.
Mrs Keech invited Queenslanders to join with men around the world on Saturday, November 25 – White Ribbon Day.
“November 25 is recognised by the United Nations as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, or White Ribbon Day, and is an opportunity for men, working in partnership with women, to show their commitment to stopping violence against women,” the Minister said.
“As domestic violence primarily affects women, it is crucial for men to take a stand against this injustice.
“Most men treat women and girls with the utmost respect and this is an opportunity for them to make a statement that violence against women is unacceptable.”
Mrs Keech said alarming new statistics about the number of reported incidents of domestic violence highlighted the magnitude of the issue in Queensland.
“In 2004/2005, Queensland police were called out to more than 41,000 domestic violence-related incidents,” Mrs Keech said.
“In addition, a 2006 national survey of young people found that one of the main areas of concern to young people is family conflict.
”Domestic violence is one of our most concerning social problems and we all have a role to play in changing the behaviour of perpetrators.
“Violence in the home is not acceptable. That message has to be acknowledged - and heeded - by women and men.”
Mrs Keech said the Beattie Government was proud to partner with CEO Challenge, the organisation that heads the White Ribbon Day campaign in the state each year.
“This year there will be local White Ribbon Day events throughout the state and I encourage everyone to buy and wear a white ribbon as a personal pledge to never commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women,” she said.
