Minister for Communities, Disability Services, Seniors and Youth
The Honourable Warren Pitt
Far North Queensland residents whose homes suffered structural damage in Cyclone Larry have until 1 December to apply for funding to assist with structural repairs.
Communities Minister Warren Pitt said the closing date had been decided when applications for Phase Three assistance slowed significantly, suggesting most eligible people had claimed their entitlements.
“We employed an extra 50 fulltime workers to consolidate efforts to help Far North Queenslanders recover from Cyclone Larry,” Mr Pitt said.
“They have worked long and hard door-knocking throughout affected communities to help people assess their needs and ensure they have access to relevant support services.
“Support is also offered through centre-based and telephone information and referral services.
“Claims are being progressively processed and payments made for repairs to start, allowing people to return to their everyday lives.
“To date, approximately 150 payments totaling more than $1 million have been made.”
Applicants are means tested and their homes must have been uninsured.
Mr Pitt said the Department of Communities was also responsible for providing personal, psychological and community support to help recovery efforts.
“I don’t want anyone who is eligible for assistance to miss out,” Mr Pitt said.
“Anyone who has not applied for Phase Three assistance should contact 1800 440 174 or a local One Stop Shop for more information as soon as possible.”
