Minister for Communities, Disability Services, Seniors and Youth
The Honourable Warren Pitt
Community organisations across the state can now apply for a share of $125,000 in Queensland Government funding to celebrate Seniors Week in 2007.
Seniors Minister, Warren Pitt, said he had called for submissions early to give community organisations time to plan their events for Seniors Week, to be celebrated from Saturday, 18 August to Sunday 26 August next year.
“Seniors Week is a great opportunity for everyone to participate in various community activities to celebrate the diversity of older people, and promote healthy ageing,” Mr Pitt said.
“But it takes some time to plan and organise these events, so I encourage Queensland communities to start thinking now about activities to celebrate the positive aspects of ageing during Seniors Week 2007.”
Applications close on Monday 27 November 2006.
Mr Pitt said $122,397 was distributed to community organisations around the state this year to organise activities celebrating older people’s participation in community life.
“Seniors Week 2006 was a great success with many celebrations including Indigenous and multicultural events, concerts, expos, dances, sporting and intergenerational art activities,” Mr Pitt said.
“Next year, Seniors Week will again promote inclusive activities, by encouraging Queenslanders of all ages and backgrounds to celebrate the positive contributions of older people.”
Funding application forms are available on the Department of Communities web site www.communities.qld.gov.au or by contacting regional offices.
