Minister for Mines and Energy
The Honourable Geoff Wilson
Hamilton portside powers ahead
A $1.2 million power upgrade of the portside development at Hamilton will benefit hundreds of residential and commercial electricity users.
Minister for Mines and Energy Geoff Wilson said the recently completed upgrade included the installation of two new underground cables in the portside development.
The underground cables run from the Energex substation on Kingsford Smith Drive to the Australia TradeCoast North Side development in Harbour Road, Hercules Street, Remora Road and Macarthur Avenue.
“The Hamilton upgrade is helping to push the state’s economic growth and expand and reinforce the local power network,” Mr Wilson said.
“The new cable will boost electricity capacity and reliability in the country’s fastest growing trade and industry precinct.
“The new power upgrade will ensure that Australia TradeCoast can continue to support industry and boost business now and well into the future,” Mr Wilson said.
Mr Wilson thanked local residents, business owners and motorists for their patience while the work was being undertaken.
“Energex has a strong focus on installing new electricity works underground where practical.
“In the last four years, Energex has installed almost 3000 km of new underground electricity cable in south east Queensland – about the equivalent distance of travelling by road from Brisbane to Darwin.
“Energex is spending $643 million this financial year on the electricity network while a further $263 million has been set aside to maintain and operate the network,” Mr Wilson said.
Energex supplies electricity to around 2.7 million people in south east Queensland.
The company’s distribution area of 25,000 square kilometres includes almost 50,000km of underground and overhead electricity lines and cables, over half a million power poles, some 40,000 transformers and more than 260,000 street lights.
