The Beattie Government - supported by the Council of Mayors (SEQ) - today finalised the preferred development option for the Mt Lindesay/North Beaudesert Study Area.

Released as part of the South East Queensland Regional Plan Amendment 1, Deputy Premier Anna Bligh said the Mt Lindesay/North Beaudesert area is expected to accommodate around 80,000 people over the next 20 years.

“Amendment 1 provides positive planning for the future of the Mt Lindesay/North Beaudesert area, building on the strengths of the South East Queensland Regional Plan,” she said.

“Like the rest of South East Queensland – planning for this area aims to achieve a delicate balance between developing urban areas for future growth and protecting our environment and landscape.”

“With Amendment 1 in place, this area now has a sustainable planning framework comprising four new urban areas at Park Ridge, Flagstone, Greenbank and Yarrabilba, with supporting industrial and commercial precincts, as well as rural living areas and open space land.”

Located just south of BrisbaneCity, the Mt Lindesay/North Beaudesert area extends from Park Ridge in the north to Veresdale in the south and from Wolffdene in the east to New Beith in the west. It is approximately 520,000 hectares, and is currently home to more than 37,000 people.

“When we released the SEQ Regional Plan in June 2005, this area was identified for further investigation and consultation,” Ms Bligh said.

“Since releasing this landmark Plan, the Queensland Government has continued to work with Beaudesert Shire, Gold Coast City and Logan City Councils and the community to undertake more detailed work to best determine development options in this part of the region for the next 20 years.”

Ms Bligh said Amendment 1 was finalised after extensive public consultation, conducted over 12 months.

“In the final round of consultation, the Office of Urban Management received 401 formal submissions during a six-week period,” she said.

“This consultation process included open house events which attracted more than 1000 people who came to access information, view maps and talk to professionals.

“An overview of the submissions we then received are outlined in a Consultation Report, which has also been made publicly available.”

Chairman of the Council of Mayors (SEQ) and Brisbane Lord Mayor, Cr Campbell Newman, said the 18 councils of the region were pleased with the finalised Amendment.

“As South East Queensland continues to grow,it is vital that we have the right planning framework in place – not just in our major centres, but across the whole region,” he said.

“With careful and considered planning we can preserve and build on the prized quality of life we enjoy in South East Queensland, while encouraging the best possible future.

“The SEQ Regional Plan is our blueprint for future development and by sticking to the vision we have established, we will remain an attractive destination for new residents, with an essential mix of economic opportunities and lifestyle choices.”

Aside from planning for the Mt Lindesay/North Beaudesert area, Amendment 1 also incorporates minor changes to the Regulatory Maps for South East Queensland to reflect existing committed urban designations in local government planning schemes, as well as some amendments to the Regulatory Provisions to improve the workability of the Regional Plan.

Copies of Amendment 1 are available through the Office of Urban Management's website (www.oum.qld.gov.au) or by calling 1800 021 818.

Released in June 2005, the SEQ Regional Plan is the statutory regional planning strategy that guides growth and development in SEQ through to 2026.
