The Honourable John Mickel

A 16-month State Government funded Skilling Queenslanders for Work project will improve the work search skills of 90 mature-age Logan jobseekers to help them find employment.

Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel said $91,600 funding for the Mature-Age Employment Program would help address employment barriers mature-age people often face when trying to re-enter the workforce.

“This job search and training project, being run by Jobcare, will help break down misconceptions about older employees,” Mr Mickel said.

“Mature-age workers are often loyal, focused, and enthusiastic workers.

“This project will give them the specialised employment and skills training they need to confidently re-enter the labour market.”

Jobcare Program Director Charles Holmes said an important part of the project is the unique five week training programs delivered to each group of 10 participants.

“This project will specifically help those participants who need to build their work confidence, increase their job search skills and develop their own job search strategy,” Mr Holmes said.

“Participants will also be able to access career counselling, mentoring and individualised support.

“Jobcare has a Logan office that has allowed us to build better connections with jobseekers, local businesses, and the wider community.”

Jobcare delivers employment and training programs through Spiritus – a member of Anglicare Australia.

Skilling Queenslanders for Work and its predecessor the Breaking the Unemployment Cycle initiative have helped to create more than 113 000 jobs across Queensland since October 1998.

This project, with others funded through Skilling Queenslanders for Work, is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide Queenslanders with the skills needed for the State’s booming economy
