Attorney-General and Minister for Justice and Women
The Honourable Rod Welford

Fifty-one of Queensland’s top teachers have been recognised for their skills and dedication, sharing in almost $400,000 of professional development scholarships and grants.

Education and Training Minister, Rod Welford, announced the winners of the New Professionalism Teacher Excellence Awards at a ceremony in Brisbane to mark World Teachers’ Day.

“These awards, including scholarships valued at up to $24,000 each, reward our most outstanding educators for their innovation and commitment in the classroom and schools,” Mr Welford said.

“The impact of these educators is felt on a daily basis, through the opportunities they are creating for students and for the leadership they are providing to other educators.

“Those honoured today – from the Atherton Tablelands to the Gold Coast - are leaders in their field and through these awards will undertake world-class professional development opportunities, including taking part in education programs in Cambodia, USA and Europe.

“They will bring their experiences back to the classroom to the benefit of students and their colleagues across the state.”

Mr Welford said the award-winning educators had made a valuable contribution in areas such as mathematics, information and communication technologies (ICT), language teaching, music, special education, biotechnology, assisting at-risk students and leadership.

“I would like to congratulate this year’s scholarship and award recipients and thank them for their tremendous achievements in improving student learning outcomes,” Mr Welford said.

”They have been involved in a diverse range of programs from developing an online genetics course to assisting Prep students to use ICT, using music therapy to enhance students’ learning and improving football performance through technology.

“The awards provide teachers with the financial support to boost their skills and knowledge through a range of professional development activities. Activities include industry placements, tertiary-level studies or attending education conferences or courses.

“Our Government is committed to supporting our school workforce to ensure they are equipped to be at the forefront of developments in education.

“As part of this, we’re investing more than $40 million this financial year in professional development for school-based staff to implement important initiatives and boost their skills.”
