Premier and Minister for Trade
The Honourable Peter Beattie
Queensland’s Executive Building in George Street, Brisbane will play host for the next five weeks to a sneak preview of some of this State’s modern art collection.
Premier Peter Beattie said the small exhibition now on display in the foyer of the Executive Building was part of the Government’s promotion of the new Gallery of Modern Art, nearing completion on South Bank.
“When the new Gallery of Modern Art opens on December 2 Queensland will have a purpose built Gallery space capable of displaying a large part of the State’s wide range of contemporary works by Australian and international artists.
“Many of these works have been carefully stored away for the past few years while the redeveloped precinct takes shape.
“The Gallery of Modern Art’s first exhibition will be the 5th Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art – the only major exhibition in the world to focus exclusively on the contemporary art of Asia, Australia and the Pacific.
“In the lead up to the opening of the $291 million Queensland Cultural Centre redevelopment – which includes a new expanded Queensland State Library – a range of modern artworks will be displayed in the Executive Building.
“The exhibitions will be changed every Thursday to help whet the appetite of modern art lovers.
“Art is all about exciting comment and discussion and I am pleased to see this week’s exhibition which includes works from modern Pakistani, Indonesian and Malaysian artists is causing plenty of interest,” Mr Beattie said.
