Caloundra residents first to plan for future growth: Fraser

Minister for Local Government, Planning and Sport Andrew Fraser today congratulated the Caloundra City Council on being the first local government in South East Queensland to release their Draft Local Growth Management Strategy for public consultation.

Mr Fraser said the council was demonstrating its clear commitment to the future of South East Queensland, the Caloundra community and the SEQ Regional Plan.

“The SEQ Regional Plan requires each local government in SEQ to prepare a Local Growth Management Strategy by 30 June 2007,” he said.

“These strategies will help councils to implement the SEQ Regional Plan at the local level - enabling councils to plan for projected local growth, in consultation with local communities.

“Through them, councils will demonstrate how they propose to meet dwelling targets and development policies outlined in the SEQ Regional Plan.”

Once a Local Growth Management Strategy is finalised, each local government is required to implement the planning scheme and non-planning scheme initiatives outlined in these strategies.

Mayor of Caloundra City Council, Cr Don Aldous is encouraging local residents to get involved with the consultation process.

“We’ve heard it many times – SEQ is the fastest-growing region in Australia,” he said.

“But, aside from telling everyone that they cannot relocate here, there is no way we can stop the movement of people as they chase jobs, lifestyle and the weather – the reasons most of us have either stayed here or moved to this region in the first place.

“If we don’t plan, and we allow this growth to just happen, it will impact on the thing we all love – the liveability of our City.

“So, I encourage all those who are interested in the future of our community to have a look at the Draft Local Growth Management Strategy that we are proposing - and have your say in response to the issues we face in the future.

“It is vital that we ensure the legacy we leave future generations is a healthy one.”

Community consultation for the Draft Caloundra City Local Growth Management Strategy starts on 30 October and finishes on 8 December 2006.

Residents can get involved by filling in a feedback form, attending one of the many displays and feedback opportunities or making a formal submission.

Information about the draft strategy is available at the Caloundra Customer Service Centre, CaloundraCity libraries, on the council’s website (www.caloundra.qld.gov.au/lgms), or by calling (07) 5420 8200

Council and the Queensland Government will review the draft strategy in light of all feedback and comments received before adopting a Local Growth Management Strategy for the City by mid-2007.
