The Honourable Lindy Nelson-Carr

The Muslim cleric at the centre of anti-women sentiments in the media this week should not attend the Eidfest in Brisbane next week.

Minister for Multiculturalism Lindy Nelson-Carr said comments by Sheik Taj Din Al-Hilali that women were responsible for their own sexual attacks were outrageous.

“I don't believe this is the view of everyday Australian Muslims,” she said.

“I’m sure the majority of Muslims would also be outraged by Sheik Hilali’s comments against women.

“These kinds of comments are unwarranted and may incite division between Australians.”

Ms Nelson-Carr said she understood that festival organisers would be meeting over the weekend to consider whether or not the Sheik should attend.

“It is my understanding from media reports that Queensland's Muslim community has said the Sheik is not welcome and I hope the committee will listen to the wishes of their community.”

Ms Nelson-Carr said sexual attacks on women, or anyone for that matter, were heinous and unacceptable in any culture.

“To suggest that the way a woman dresses or looks means open slather for attackers is outrageous.

“I’m very concerned about the impact of the Sheik’s message on the community.

“There is absolutely no excuse for sexually attacking anyone.”

Ms Nelson-Carr said she soon would meet with leaders of the Muslim community and raise this issue with them.
