More than 6,000 homes and businesses stand to gain from a $4.5 million upgrade of the Morayfield North electricity substation and associated underground power works in the surrounding area.

Mines and Energy Minister Geoff Wilson said more than 3.5km of underground electricity cables had been laid between Energex’s Morayfield North substation and the surrounding area.

“This followed the successful commissioning of a second transformer earlier this year, effectively doubling the electricity capacity at the substation,” he said.

Mr Wilson thanked home owners, business operators and motorists for their patience while the vital upgraded was underway.

Member for Pumicestone Carryn Sullivan said the upgrade would improve the reliability of electricity supply to homes and businesses in Caboolture, Caboolture South, Morayfield, Beachmere and Burpengary – including CabooltureHospital.

“In three years, the local area has experienced around a 30% increase in electricity demand through the building boom,” Mrs Sullivan said.

“The upgrade will ensure projected demands are met.

“Work included the installation of underground cables along Lower King Street, Poinsettia Street, Poinciana Street, Jacaranda Street, across Morayfield Road and ending at Dominick Street,” Mrs Sullivan said.

Energex has a strong focus on installing new electricity works underground where practical.

In the last four years Energex has installed almost 3000 km of new underground electricity cable in south east Queensland – about the equivalent distance of travelling by road from Brisbane to Darwin.

Energex is spending $643 million this financial year on the electricity network while a further $263 million has been set aside to maintenance and operation of the network.

Energex supplies electricity to a population of around 2.7 million people in south east Queensland.

The company’s distribution area of 25,000 square kilometres includes almost 50,000km of underground and overhead electricity lines and cables, over half a million power poles, some 40,000 transformers and more than 260,000 street lights.
