Premier and Minister for Trade
The Honourable Peter Beattie
Premier Peter Beattie today announced the winner of this year’s Queensland Premier’s Drama Award – Brisbane based playwright David Brown for The Estimator.
Premier Beattie made the announcement at the Queensland Theatre Company’s 2007 Season Launch.
"David Brown has written a funny, insightful and entertaining script,” Mr Beattie said.
“This is the third Premier’s Drama Award and it is all about nurturing our home-grown creative and professional talent.
“The Queensland Theatre Company is producing David’s play as part of its 2007 season during Queensland Week – no other playwriting competition in the country offers such a prize,” Mr Beattie added.
"I’m delighted to also announce today that we are continuing to support the Premier’s Drama Award and have committed $230,000 for the award cycle in 2008-09.
When The Estimator is staged in June next year, it will become the third Queensland Premier’s Drama Award winner to receive a full production - following in the successful footsteps of Sven Svenson’s Road to the She Devil’s Salon and Adam Grosetti’s Mano Nera.
“Importantly, the Award provides a unique opportunity for audiences to enjoy stories about Queensland while promoting discussion about contemporary Queensland – its people, society, politics, prejudices and history,” Mr Beattie said.
The Estimator will share the stage with an extraordinary program of main stage productions next year, with Queensland Theatre Company announcing an exciting and eclectic mix of stories and personalities appearing in its 2007 Season, including Private Fears in Public Places, Heroes, Hamlet and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
David Brown has worked throughout the Australian performing arts industry as an actor, writer, director, producer and teacher.
David wrote and directed the award winning Keep Everything You Love for the Brisbane Festival and his play Eating Ice-cream With Your Eyes Closed premiered at the Queensland Theatre Company in 2004.
