Minister for Emergency Services
The Honourable Pat Purcell

State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers from the Redlands region were tonight honoured for their commitment to the safety and wellbeing of their communities.

In a ceremony at the Redland SES training facility in Cleveland, Emergency Services Minister Pat Purcell and Member for Cleveland Phil Weightman presented four SES volunteers with medals for long and distinguished service.

Mr Purcell said SES volunteers right around the State had a vital role in preparing and responding to disasters.

“SES volunteers are always ready to help out in a time of need, such as during storms and floods and to search for missing persons. It’s important they receive proper recognition for the great work they do,” Mr Purcell said.

Mr Weightman said the SES volunteers in the Redlands and Cleveland area made a magnificent contribution to the local community.

“In the 2005-06 financial year volunteers in the Redlands Unit undertook a total of 6960 hours in training and activations. That’s a significant contribution and on behalf of the local community I would like to thank all the local SES volunteers for their ongoing commitment,” Mr Weightman said.

The Redland Shire SES Unit comprises the Cleveland Group and Stradbroke Island Group. The Unit’s primary tasks are responding to storm damage, land searches for missing persons, forensic searches in conjunction with Police, and air search observers.
